About Schmidt, with Jack Nicholson and Kathy Bates, ends with a powerful statement of regret. If it left you shell-shocked, remember: it's based on a novel by Louis Begley -- and he wrote a sequel.

All I know is it has the optomistic title Schmidt Delivered. What happened to his daughter's fiance? What happened after the letter to Ndugu? I've started reading the books to find out...

Roger Ebert slipped another poignant personal observation into his review, saying the film offers a lesson to teenagers. "If they define their lives only in terms of a good job, a good paycheck and a comfortable suburban existence, they could end up like Schmidt, dead in the water.

"They should start paying attention to that crazy English teacher."
